Our Top Trees List

Customers frequently ask us which trees we recommend for certain situations. Here is a short list of trees that have proven to do well in our harsh urban environment. The heading of each list contains trees or planting situations that should be avoided. Click on the tree name for a link to a photo and description of the tree from the University of Illinois or the University of Florida.

Conifers to be planted instead of Blue, Black and White Spruces:
Balsam Fir (Abies balsamea) can tolerate moist sites
Hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) can tolerate shady conditions
Concolor Fir (Abies concolor) has a similar color as blue spruce without the disease problems
Norway Spruce (Picea abies) non-native, but the most disease resistant spruce if deer browsing is a problem for the other three. There is a great columnar cultivar for limited space
Large maturing deciduous trees to be planted instead of Ash, Elm, Linden, Silver and Norway Maples:
Kentucky Coffeetree (Gymnocladus dioicus) great form in maturity
River Birch (Betula nigra) most disease resistant birch
Turkish Filbert (Corylus colurna) has a form similar to linden
Freemanii Maples, (Acer x Freemanii) ‘Sienna’ (great for fall color,) ‘Marmo’ (narrow form,) ‘Autumn Blaze’ (retains fall color the longest, but more difficult to train.)
Small maturing trees to be planted under power lines or in limited space areas:
Witch Hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) native with great architecture, usually multi-stem
Hazelnut or American Filbert (Corylus americana) native with edible nuts, large shrub
Serviceberry (Amelanchier spp.) edible fruit quickly consumed by birds in early summer, great fall color, multi-stem or tree form
Musclewood (Carpinus caroliniana) native with great trunk texture, usually multi-stem
Ironwood (Ostrya virginiana) native with ornamental hop like fruit, small tree
